Track Progress. Build Discipline. Unlock Potential.
Martial arts at Chi Combat System offer much more than kicks and punches—they’re about building character, discipline, confidence, and physical strength. One of the key tools we use to support this journey is our grading system, designed to help students track their progress and work towards meaningful goals.
Let’s explore how grading works at CCS, why it’s important, and what students (and parents) should expect.
🔑 Why Grading Matters at Chi Combat System
At CCS, grading is more than just earning a new belt—it’s a structured way to help students:
Visualize progress and celebrate improvement
Stay motivated with clear, achievable goals
Build discipline through regular practice
Learn how to deal with pressure in a healthy, empowering way
It also creates a shared experience among students, building camaraderie and community. Everyone is on a journey, and grading milestones keep that journey inspiring and focused.
🥋 How Our Grading System Is Structured
Our students begin as white belts, and progress through coloured ranks as they demonstrate improved skill, focus, and attitude. Each rank includes key components:
Hand Technique (Red Tag)
Leg Technique (Orange Tag)
Pattern (Green Tag)
Blocks & Defence (Yellow Tag)
Speed Drill (White Tag – for Gold Belt and above)
Balance & Focus
Instructors award tags in class when a student consistently performs a skill with the required control, accuracy, and effort.
Once students collect all the required tags, they are invited to grade.
📆 When Do Gradings Happen?
Regular grading events are held on the last Wednesday of each month, currently hosted at Scouts – The Endeavour Halls.
If a student cannot attend the event, private grading sessions are also available (subject to availability).
📚 What’s Included in a Grading Exam?
Each grading includes:✅ Demonstration of techniques learned at current belt level✅ Assessment of speed, focus, balance, and discipline✅ Performance of patterns (depending on belt level)✅ Evaluation of attitude and improvement in class
Once grading is completed, results are submitted, and the belt and certificate are issued—usually within one week.
💡 Tips to Prepare for Grading at CCS
Train consistently – effort matters more than perfection
Ask your instructors what you need to focus on
Practice at home – short sessions make a big difference
Stay positive – grading is a learning opportunity, not a test of perfection
🌱 Beyond the Belt – The Bigger Picture
While grading is important, it’s not the finish line. At Chi Combat System, we believe in developing strong minds and strong bodies. Students learn to:
Handle pressure with calm and focus
Grow through challenges
Support their teammates
Set goals and commit to them
As students progress, they may also become part of our Leadership Team, taking on roles to guide and inspire others.
Whether you're a parent or a student, understanding how grading works at Chi Combat System helps you get the most out of the journey.
Every belt is earned. Every lesson builds character. And every student has the potential to achieve something great.
